Indians make up largest immigrant group with citizenship in OECD countries
India is the largest source country in the world of immigrants receiving citizenship in OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) nations in 2015, a report released on 29 June revealed.
About 130,000 people of Indian origin have received citizenship in these countries in 2015, as they overtook Mexicans, Filipinos, Moroccans, and Chinese.
Entitled ‘International Migration Outlook 2017,’ the report was published by OECD, a global think-tank of 35 member countries, including the US, European nations, Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand.
Family migration, with four main subcategories — accompanying family, family formation, family reunification and international adoption — has been the main pathway to permanent migration in the OECD member states in recent years, according to the report.
India ranks fifth in the list of source countries with most migrants to OECD nations, the report added. The year 2015 saw OECD member states receiving more ‘new immigrants’ from China, Poland Romania, and Syria.
In 2015, the number of immigrants from India to these nations was 268,000, which comprises about four percent of the total global immigration to OECD countries in that year.
It was also said in the report that among new migrants to OECD nations, 29 percent belonged to another OECD nation.
India is the second-largest source country for students in OECD nations, as 186,000 people from this country were studying in OECD countries. China, with 600,000 students, is the largest source country for people pursuing studies in this blog.
The US is the most sought-after country for such students, followed by Great Britain, said the report.
